Why did I choose this watch?

Enicar is a lesser-known brand in vintage watch collecting circles, but it shouldn't be.

During the golden age of sporty wristwatches (1960s-1970s), Enicar produced timepieces of incredible quality and beauty, including divers and chronographs. With a look halfway between Heuer and Omega, Enicar watches are often distinguished by their colorful dials and unique cases.

This piece, a Sherpa OPS, is distinguished primarily by its PVD-finished case. Among the first of its kind (along with the Heuer Monaco “Dark Lord” and the DOXA Army), the OPS is based on the Sherpa 600, but has been oriented towards a resolutely military/outdoor aesthetic.

In pristine condition, this example features its original PVD finish and a “Mark II” configuration dial and bezel set, with orange accents and the characteristic twin-crown design.

OPS models are very rare and are perhaps the most collectible models in the Enicar range - we don't know when we'll see more, so don't miss the opportunity to get this honest and extremely cool example

Hisitory

Although still relatively unknown in the USA, Enicar is a brand with roots in the 19th-century Swiss watchmaking community of Granges, near La Chaux-de-Fonds. The brand's progenitor, Ariste Racine (who derived the name “Enicar” by reversing his own surname) grew the business steadily into the 20th century, when it was widely acclaimed for its robust pocket watches that became a favorite of World War I officers.

In the 1930s, Enicar began producing wristwatches and set itself the goal of making watches that could be worn in any environment. Inspired by the needs of mountaineers and explorers, Enicar launched its Sherpa line, developing various sporty models well into the 1960s. Among these was the Sherpa Guide, a sturdy tool-watch incorporating date, GMT and 24-hour functions which, combined with the universal hour bezel, enabled the wearer to calculate the time in the world's major cities.
