History of the Rolex Oysterquartz
The Oysterquartz holds a unique place in Rolex history. Rolex developed the Oysterquartz line in the 1970s in response to the rise of quartz watches, which led to what is now known as the Quartz Crisis . During this period, traditional mechanical movements were losing popularity due to the influx of quartz watches, which were more accurate and less expensive.
Rolex, rather than abandon its principles of quality and prestige, chose to take up the challenge by creating the Oysterquartz, a series of watches equipped with high-end quartz movements designed by Rolex. The first Oysterquartz was launched in 1977 after several years of development.
Importance in Rolex history
The Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17014 represents a fascinating chapter in Rolex’s history, marking the only period when the brand mass-produced quartz watches. Although it was designed to respond to a competitive threat at the time, the Oysterquartz retained the elegance and robustness of Rolex watches while proving that even quartz watches could achieve levels of prestige and mechanical quality.
Today, the Oysterquartz, with its unique design and singular history, is a sought-after collector's item, especially models with white gold components such as the reference 17014 .
